Chicago Latinx Scholars' Innovate a Better Chicago Design Challenge

August 9th, 2019

This past Friday Walmer Saavedra was a guest speaker at Innovate a Better Chicago Design Challenge. The event challenged 50 Chicago high schoolers to propose solutions to some of the most pressing issues affecting communities across Chicago.

Along with other nonprofits and organizations, Walmer spoke about his career path and what motivated him to co-found a nonprofit. He also spoke about his experience in high school and college.

Thank you to the Chicago Latinx Scholars organization for hosting this session and for inviting us to speak at the event. What a great way to expose young people to pressing issues and innovative solutions.

VAMOS Design Charrette

June 26th, 2019

Human Scale was invited to do a presentation for the VAMOS kids during their summer camp. Walmer also introduced our 2020 summer project for El Paseo Community Garden.

At the end of the presentation, the kids were challenged to come up with ideas for the ADA accessible planting station and the picnic area. A couple of weeks later the kids came up with multiple sketches and ideas for these two spaces. Some included outdoor vending machines, solar panels, colored plexi glass, a big entrance sign, and more. We will now take these ideas and use them as inspiration for the project.

Way to go kids!

Kids Garden Days Begin at El Paseo

July 2nd, 2019

El Paseo Community Garden began their 2019 Kids Garden Days on July 2nd. We prioritized the outdoor classroom’s main elements in order to have it ready for these workshops.

The classroom was designed specifically for these days, we designed six movable seats and five fixed benches. We also provided ample counter top space for these space-taking activities.

Glad to see how our design is being used and enjoyed by the kids!
